In September, 1914, the 1/8th Middlesex battalion went to Gibraltar, the first Territorial Army unit to go abroad. In February, 1915, they returned home and in March they went to France where they joined 85 Brigade of 28th Division. Their first experience of the trenches came at the end of March when they underwent trench warfare training with 7 Brigade of 3rd Division in the line to the south of Ypres in Belgium. Here they suffered their first casualty when Charles Colhoun died from wounds on 31st March. |
